Cover Story on Glens: October
'04 issue of THE AKC GAZETTE.
Back issues available at www.akc.org
There are no commercially published books devoted exclusively to the Glen. Several of the newer dog " encyclopedias" have an entry for the Glen. There are numerous books on dog training, housebreaking, etc. Find the one that suits you best. Your breeder might be able to make some suggestions based on experience.
- THE INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE DOG by Anne Rogers Clark and Anthony Brace, Batsford, Ltd. (Glen listing: p.242) A magnificent book with exceptional photography. A beautiful photo of a great Glen and a generally correct article.
- THE MINI ATLAS OF DOG BREEDS by Andrew DePrisco and James B. Johnson. T.F.H. Publications. (Glen listing p. 497) A full page devoted to the Glen with a photo.
- THE COMPLETE DOG BOOK by Dr. Peter Larkin and Mike Stockman. Lorenz Books. (Glen listing p.161) Though the Glen listing is brief, this book does picture Glens in both blue brindle and wheaten.
- THE SPORTING TERRIER by D. Brian Plummer. The Boydell Press. An entire chapter devoted to the Glen and several mentions elsewhere in chapters on the other Irish terriers. Particularly valuable for its honest view of Glen history.
- EARTHDOG INS AND OUTS by Jo Ann Frier-Murza, A comprehensive guide to earthdogs including a section on the Glen. Available through the author.
The following books are out of print but are worth looking for. Some are to be found in large libraries--all can be found in the AKC library in New York--or at second-hand bookshops, or through specialist book dealers catering to canine subjects. Many of these dealers have booths at large dog shows and run ads in dog magazines. Also
Barnes and Noble's out of print book service and Amazon.com on the Internet both might be helpful.
- THE DOGS OF IRELAND by Anna Redlich, Dundalgan Press, 1949. This is a beautifully written comprehensive survey of all of the Irish breeds, with a chapter on the Glen that includes historical information, description, the original standard and a photo of a Glen from the 1930s.
- HOUNDS AND TERRIERS by Ron Delaney, Blanford Press, Poole, Dorset, United Kingdom, 1984.
- AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO SOME RARE AND UNUSUAL DOG BREEDS by John F. Gordon, John Bartholomew and Sons, Ltd., Edinburgh, Scotland, 1974. Two pictures of Glens with a brief history, description and standard.
- TERRIERS OF THE WORLD: THEIR HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTICS by Tom Horner, Faber and Faber, Ltd., London, 1984. A good discussion of the history and development of the breed.
- THE NATIVE DOGS OF IRELAND, Catherine Osborn (ed.), The Irish Kennel Club, Dublin, Ireland, 1984.(Available through the Irish Kennel Club, Fottrell House, Harolds Cross Bridge, Dublin 6W, Ireland. Telephone (353) 1-4533300). A nicely done book with information on all the Irish breeds including the Glen and illustrated with original watercolors.
- SIMON AND SCHUSTERS GUIDE TO DOGS by Gino Pugnetti, Simon and Schuster, New York, 1980.
- THE NEW OBSERVERS BOOK OF DOGS by Catherine G. Sutton, Frederick Warne, London, 1983. A pocket-sized reference guide with brief descriptions and color pictures.
Both of the following books are excellent sources of background information on the hard gristle of what it means to own a working terrier:
- THE WORKING TERRIER by D. Brian Plummer, Boydell Press, Woodbridge, Suffolk, United Kingdom, 1978.
- THE MODERN WORKING TERRIER by Michael Shaw, Boydell Press, Woodbridge, Suffolk, United Kingdom, 1985.
